Why is it important to get a flu shot in the warmer months?

Flu shots are typically recommended in October to coincide with the peak flu season in countries like the US, but Vietnam’s tropical monsoon climate means that flu shots are still necessary year-round. Influenza cases in Vietnam can occur at any time of the year, with peaks in March-April and September-October. Recent reports from Vietnamese hospitals have shown an increase in cases of influenza A and B, along with complications.

While most people who get the flu can recover on their own within a week, certain populations such as children, pregnant women, the elderly, and those with underlying illnesses are at a higher risk of serious complications if they get the flu. Pregnant women are particularly vulnerable to complications from flu infections, including birth defects, premature birth, low birth weight, and stillbirths.

Getting a flu shot is highly recommended even during hot weather in Vietnam to prevent illness and its complications. Studies show that flu vaccination can reduce death rates by 70-80%, decrease hospitalizations related to the flu by up to 50%, and decrease complications related to the virus by up to 60%. Vaccination is especially important for pregnant women as it can reduce hospitalization rates by up to 90%, stillbirth rates by up to 43%, and premature birth rates by up to 32%.

Flu viruses change throughout the year, which is why an annual flu shot is necessary. There are various types of influenza vaccines available in Vietnam, including quadrivalent and trivalent vaccines that protect against different strains of the virus. Pregnant women should receive their flu shots during their second or third trimester to protect themselves and their newborns.

If you start experiencing symptoms of the flu such as fever, chills, coughing, sore throat or muscle aches it’s important to take precautions such as avoiding crowded places
