UK economy bounces back as it grows 0.6% in last quarter, exiting recession

The UK economy has shown remarkable resilience, growing by 0.6 per cent in the first quarter of the year, according to the Office for National Statistics. This growth was much stronger than the 0.4 per cent improvement predicted by economists, indicating that the UK is well on its way to recovery after two quarters of decline in the latter half of 2023.

Chancellor Jeremy Hunt hailed this positive growth as a sign that the economy is starting to return to full health for the first time since the pandemic. He highlighted that despite facing challenges such as rising inflation and interest rates, the UK’s strong growth prospects make it stand out among other G7 countries. Moreover, he noted benefits such as rising wages, falling energy prices, and tax cuts for workers.

The growth was driven by improvements in both services and production sectors, with notable contributions from sectors like human health, social services, and retail. ONS director Liz McKeown emphasized that this positive growth was mainly driven by the strength in service industries, particularly retail, public transport, health care and car manufacturers. While construction output saw a slight decline during the quarter compared to previous months, it was not as significant as expected.

Labour’s shadow chancellor Rachel Reeves cautioned against celebrating too soon while reminding that despite this progress made so far, there is still work to be done before we can say that we have fully recovered from recession.

In summary, despite some challenges ahead such as inflation and interest rates increases; The UK economy showed remarkable resilience in Q1 with a growth rate of 0.6% which was better than anticipated by economists and it indicates a sign of hopeful future for our economy
